Most critics come away impressed. Fifteen of nineteen reviews are positive, and the praise gathers around the same things: an original premise, a dream-within-a-dream structure that stays coherent under pressure, and set pieces, folding cities and gravity-defying chases, that critics keep returning to. DiCaprio is picked out repeatedly, and several critics find the thread of grief and guilt over his character’s wife the anchor that holds the layers together.
The reservations gather too. A number of critics find the film cooler in the heart than the head, with exposition doing work the characters should, and some think it long, or quick to fade once the lights come up. The spread is wide, from full marks down to the low thirties. The Independent and Slant Magazine judge it overburdened and hollow, and Screen Daily finds it short of mind-bending, for all its spectacle.

Nolan has outdone himself with an original sci-fi concept that repackages familiar action elements across multiple dream levels for corporate espionage and idea-planting. The film excels visually and with its cast, especially DiCaprio, though heavy exposition and relentless pacing can exhaust viewers.

Inception is an exemplary meta-movie about how movies are made, constructed with coherent, hermetic rules like chess. DiCaprio is terrific in the lead, though the dialogue is limited and the film has the camp-seriousness of 1950s B-science fiction.

An ambitious but ultimately unwieldy pseudo-heist film that prioritizes intricate, exposition-heavy rules of dream infiltration over emotional engagement or visceral thrills. It offers striking imagery and parallel-editing skill in the finale but suffers from hollow characters, derivative elements, and a lack of meaningful ideas.
