Fi1m perspective

Adarsh Gourav makes the effort of pleasing other people uncomfortable to watch. His absorbing work in The White Tiger gives us reason to follow him; Alien: Earth gives him too little to do.

Gratitude looks tiring when Adarsh Gourav plays it. In Ramin Bahrani’s The White Tiger (2021), his Balram Halwai has to make his employers believe that their condescending kindness is welcome, and Gourav keeps the effort apparent without making the response seem false. Eagerness, resentment and calculation remain visible together; we are never asked to pick one and dismiss the others. We winced because he made accepting that kindness look like another duty of service. It is an absorbing performance, particularly good at showing how a man can want to please someone he also resents.

Rukh (2017) had already given him a leading role opposite Manoj Bajpayee before The White Tiger brought international recognition. The subsequent work includes the ensemble of Kho Gaye Hum Kahan (2023) and the lead as Nasir Shaikh in Reema Kagti’s Superboys of Malegaon (2025), about small-town filmmaking aspirations. Young men negotiating class, ambition and their place among other people recur across his work. Balram remains our clearest reason to follow him: he can carry a film without asking us to approve of the man he plays.

Bahrani gets the strongest work of the performances we have reviewed, but he also overexplains what Gourav has made clear. The White Tiger spends too long making its points in the middle, and the extra explanation is especially frustrating beside an actor who can show the demands of servitude in a response to his employers. The performance deserves a film that is quicker to move on. We would rather watch Gourav negotiate another encounter than be told again what his circumstances mean.

Noah Hawley’s Alien: Earth (2025) gives him a different problem: his hybrid, Slightly, has too little to do. Gourav shares that limitation with Erana James, Lily Newmark and Jonathan Ajayi, whose characters each make us wish for more time with them. The cast takes the strangeness seriously, though the series spends too long talking about what makes a person. We would gladly exchange some of that discussion for another scene with Slightly. Start with The White Tiger; its middle needs patience, but he earns it.
