Fi1m perspective

Adria Arjona is quick, funny and convincing under pressure. We rate her most when she has room to be playful, though even a thriller with problems can benefit from her practical good sense.

In Blink Twice (2024), Adria Arjona makes Sarah funny without making her foolish. Sarah is a woman Frida recognises from television, but Arjona gives her a briskness that matters more than that introduction. We laughed at her quick delivery, and were glad of the good sense behind it. Zoë Kravitz’s thriller is handsome and well cast, but its explanation proves less interesting than its mystery. Arjona remains one of the reasons we recommend it to anyone already inclined towards the genre.

Fantasy television gave her an early foothold, first as Dorothy Gale in Emerald City (2017), then as Anathema Device in Good Omens (2019). The recurring demand was resourcefulness, a quality that can become rather dull if a character is never allowed to struggle. Andor (2022), in which she plays Bix Caleen alongside Diego Luna, gives that resilience more time to develop. The series takes too long to settle into its opening, but its patience pays off in people worth caring about. Arjona makes Bix’s psychological and physical hardship convincing, with room to develop the character across two seasons.

Hit Man (2023), directed by Richard Linklater, gives her a co-leading part opposite Glen Powell and more opportunity for romantic comedy. Their chemistry makes the pairing persuasive, and gives her humour room to work without the immediate business of surviving an ordeal. The move towards leading feature parts from 2023 is welcome: she should not have to spend every part demonstrating how much punishment a character can take. There is room for more of that playfulness in the thrillers, too.

The limitation is often the part itself. The underwritten supporting part in Morbius (2022) offers less scope for the qualities that make Sarah worth watching. Kravitz gets something valuable from letting Arjona be quick and practical, even when the film around her falters. For the fullest introduction, start with Andor and allow its slow opening some patience.
