Adrianne Palicki is the actor casting directors reach for when a part needs to hit somebody and mean it. The unhurried, grounded work on Friday Night Lights suggested a good deal more; the franchises have mostly hired the fists.
Fi1m perspective
Watch what she does with Ms. Perkins in John Wick (2014). The film belongs to Keanu Reeves and never pretends otherwise, and Palicki is on screen for a few scenes as a fellow professional who wants the price on his head and does not waste breath getting to it. She does not smile. She does not explain herself. The part was written for a man and adjusted for her, and Palicki has said the makers "just didn't want to weaken the character at all. They wanted to keep that masculine, emotionless character intact, which is great and I think it really worked." It did, and we found ourselves rooting for her against the film's own hero.
She came up through guest work: Smallville (2004), then Jessica Moore in Supernatural (2005), a small part in a series we rate for its two leads and for little else. The turn was Tyra Collette on Friday Night Lights (2006–2011), fifty-two episodes under Jason Katims, the role that made her name and gave her, on the evidence of what followed, the one thing the action films never asked for: time. After it came Legion (2010), the unaired Wonder Woman pilot (2011), Red Dawn (2012), Lady Jaye in G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), and Bobbi Morse across Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2014–2016). Then Commander Kelly Grayson across The Orville (2017–2022), opposite Seth MacFarlane.
What works is the physical conviction. She trained for months in judo and jiu-jitsu for John Wick and performs her own stunts, and it shows in the way she takes a hit: as a fact, not a cue for acting. What works less well is how narrowly the industry has read that. Strong, capable, armed; the same three adjectives for a decade, in properties built around other people. The case for the rest of her, the comedy and the ex-spouse sparring, rests on The Orville, which gave her a first officer who is usually right and a captain who used to be married to her, and let her play both sides of that.
She remains busy, in television and independent films, and the parts keep coming. Someone should give her a script where nobody throws a punch and see what she does with the silence. Katims did, once, and it lasted five seasons.
