Fi1m perspective

Alan Ruck makes awkward supporting characters worth worrying about. We value the sweetness he brings to people who are anxious or deluded, especially when a comedy gives their unhappiness enough time to register.

Cameron Frye makes being taken out for a good time look like hard work. In John Hughes's Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986), Alan Ruck gives the friend who cannot relax enough weight to make Ferris's confidence look questionable. Matthew Broderick supplies the charm, but Ruck lets us feel the effort of going along with it. We felt unexpectedly protective of Cameron because being swept along by Ferris seems to exhaust him. Ruck is the reason the comedy has something at stake beyond getting away with a day off school.

Ferris can be hard to take, and Ruck's resistance is a large part of what makes that bearable. He gives the jokes a consequence: it matters whether Cameron gets anything out of this friendship. Hughes's faith that a friend might help a teenager find some self-respect is touching, but Ferris's methods make that faith worth questioning. Ruck keeps the doubt present without making the film stop being funny, or asking us to dismiss Cameron's trouble as soon as the next joke arrives.

Cameron was his breakthrough, but the part also narrowed what he was offered: the awkward best friend became a type he found hard to escape. Supporting film work included Stephens in Jan de Bont's Speed (1994) and Rabbit in Twister (1996). We recommend Speed for its engrossing action and the reasons Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock give us to care, rather than as a demonstration of what Ruck can do. Television gave him the regular part of Stuart Bondek in Spin City (1996–2002), before a long stretch of guest appearances.

Succession (2018–2023) gave him Connor Roy, the deluded eldest son, and a prominent place in an ensemble again. The part suits his ability to find something vulnerable in a person who is being foolish. Strong writing matters here: it gives him more to play than a familiar awkwardness. We would still start with Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and pay attention to the friend who has to work hardest to enjoy it.
