Fi1m perspective

Alison Oliver is persuasive as women who struggle to keep their discomfort private. We rate her contribution to Saltburn, but want the writing to give her more to do with the unease she creates.

In Saltburn (2023), Alison Oliver's Venetia Catton comes up from the pool with a cigarette and something she has been told not to say. Oliver makes her look accustomed to being indulged and still dissatisfied. The small breach of manners is more interesting than another display of wealth: it suggests someone who knows the rules and has grown tired of them. We rate the performance, though Emerald Fennell does not give that dissatisfaction enough purpose.

The lead role of Frances Flynn in Conversations with Friends (2022) came before her feature debut in Saltburn. The shift from a television lead to a crowded film ensemble asks for a different kind of precision. Venetia has to establish herself among people who are already making a considerable noise, and Oliver does enough to make us wish the film would spend longer with her.

Fennell gives Venetia a house that helps explain her manner. Linus Sandgren's near-square frame keeps the people a little too close, while Suzie Davies fills their rooms with dark wood and stuffed birds. Anthony B. Willis's choir and Victoria Boydell's compressed summer montage make the idleness feel grander than it deserves. We laughed at the dinner table because Rosamund Pike delivers the insults without signalling a joke. But our reservation about Saltburn matters here: rudeness alone cannot make its account of class convincing, and Oliver cannot supply what the writing lacks.

In The Order (2024), Justin Kurzel casts her as Debbie Mathews, wife to Nicholas Hoult's Robert Jay Mathews, and places them at the breakfast table. That domestic setting helps make Hoult's calm delivery frightening; Oliver contributes to the effect, though the part gives us less to judge than Venetia. The crime series Task (2025) casts her as Lizzie Stover. Its family troubles are worth caring about, but the investigation takes too long to gather pace; our reservations concern the storytelling rather than anything we can fairly lay at Oliver's door.

Playing Isabella Linton in Wuthering Heights (2026) brings her back to Fennell, a collaboration worth following without assuming that the director's excesses always serve the actor. We would welcome more leading parts before deciding how much of Oliver's restraint is her choice and how much is what these smaller roles permit. For Oliver, start with Saltburn; keep expectations of its satire modest.
