Fi1m perspective

Amélie Hoeferle is persuasive when a character has something to say and reasons not to say it. In Sterling Point, her wary pace makes the scenes with Ella Rubin worth waiting for, though the surrounding mystery is much less compelling.

In Sterling Point (2026), Amélie Hoeferle lets Ella Rubin do the hurrying. Rubin’s Annie arrives on a Canadian island with a plan; Hoeferle’s Ramona has grown up there and knows how confined life on it can be. Annie has only just discovered that Ramona is her sister, and their conversations are full of interruptions and deliberate misunderstandings. Hoeferle’s slower, warier manner makes the friction convincing. We rate her highly here because she can make reluctance to speak hold our attention.

Her feature debut, as Vipsania Sickle in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023), followed several short films. She went on to play Izzy Waller in Night Swim (2024) and Sarah in Ari Aster’s Eddington (2025). We would be wary of claiming an established screen personality from those credits alone. Our Eddington review did not single her out. Sterling Point, her first major television lead, gives us considerably more to discuss.

Megan Park, who created Sterling Point and directed alongside Aurora Guerrero and Andrew Ahn, gives the sisters her strongest dialogue. They pretend to discuss one thing while trying to say another, and Hoeferle’s caution lets us hear the difficulty beneath the words. We were moved by these exchanges because neither sister could quite bring herself to speak plainly. Rubin’s speed matters to Hoeferle’s performance: the difference between them gives their scenes a rhythm that neither could supply alone.

The caveat is that Sterling Point gives her a stronger part than it gives us a mystery. Its performances carry it; the supposed source of suspense is the least interesting thing on screen. We would like to see her play someone less guarded before treating Ramona’s reserve as her permanent style. There is no need to prescribe a whole career from one substantial role. Start with Sterling Point for the conversations, rather than the clues.
