Fi1m perspective

Angeline Ball is a fine ensemble actor, with comic timing that does not insist on being noticed. We value what she brings to The Commitments; her frequent casting as the outspoken woman risks making a skilled performance sound simple.

In The Commitments (1991), Angeline Ball’s Imelda Quirke belongs to a band in which nobody seems inclined to wait for permission to speak. Ball, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Bronagh Gallagher help make the exchanges feel untidy, and the jokes are more convincing for it. We laughed because they sound like people speaking their minds, without stopping to signal how amusing they are. Alan Parker gives the ensemble room to work this way. Ball is well served by a director who allows conversation to be something other than a succession of cleanly delivered lines.

Imelda is one of the backing singers, but Ball’s contribution is not confined to the music. Robert Arkins’s Jimmy Rabbitte, Andrew Strong’s Deco Cuffe and Johnny Murphy’s Joey ‘The Lips’ Fagan all benefit from an ensemble that sounds ready to answer back. Ball helps make this a group worth spending time with, which matters as much to a band comedy as the songs. We recommend the film with a small reservation about the polish that creeps in; its occasional rough acting is more welcome than another carefully advertised joke.

Imelda was her breakthrough, and the tendency to keep seeing her as that character is understandable without being especially helpful. She followed it with supporting film work, including Tina in John Boorman’s The General (1998), alongside Brendan Gleeson. The lead role of Molly Bloom in the James Joyce adaptation Bloom (2003) gave her a different responsibility from belonging to a busy ensemble. Hidden Assets (2021) later put her at the centre of an Irish crime drama as DS Emer Berry.

She is often cast as earthy, outspoken women, and the danger is that the description becomes the whole part. What we value in Parker’s film is more specific: her timing helps the other performances work, rather than merely securing her own laugh. We would look for roles that give her more to do than supply the next sharp remark. Start with The Commitments, and listen to the exchanges between the songs.
