Angus Sampson makes imposing size and a gravelly voice useful for comedy as well as menace. We rate him as a character actor, with one reservation: the welcome relief he brings to Insidious needs firmer limits.
Fi1m perspective
In Insidious (2011), Angus Sampson's Tucker and Leigh Whannell's Specs interrupt all that nervous watching with a comic double act. We laughed with relief because their exchanges gave us a break from waiting for the next fright. James Wan is right to let the pressure ease, and Sampson earns his place in a horror film without having to supply the horror. The qualification matters: the jokes run on, and the earlier alarm starts to seem too easy to dismiss. We like the pairing more than we like the time allotted to it.
That eccentric supporting work grew out of Australian film and television parts through the 2000s, with Tucker becoming a recurring role across the Insidious series. The Mule (2014), which Sampson co-wrote with Whannell, co-directed, produced and starred in, gave him considerably more responsibility. The largely silent Bear Gerhardt in the second series of Fargo (2015) offered a different use for his imposing presence. These are useful distinctions for an actor whose size and gravelly voice might otherwise encourage the same casting decision every time.
George Miller cast him as the Organic Mechanic in Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), then brought him back for Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024). We recommend the latter for Miller's invention and the strength of its middle stretch, though the digital sand and excessive talking are harder to love. Sampson's return also continues his work in physically unusual character parts. For anyone following his performances, this is another supporting appearance rather than a film built around him; our enthusiasm for Miller's action should not be mistaken for a claim that Sampson is its chief attraction.
Sampson's habit of changing a delivery or adding something unexpected to prompt a response from another actor helps explain his suitability for supporting work. He gives a scene partner something to react to, which is useful even when it does not call attention to itself. The director still has to know when to move on. Start with Insidious for the partnership with Whannell, provided a little comedy in the haunted house does not spoil the evening.
