Fi1m perspective

Annabeth Gish is the actor you cast when a scene needs someone sensible in it: the doctor, the agent, the sheriff. Steady and easy to undervalue, she has become the quiet fixture of Mike Flanagan's company.

Put Annabeth Gish in a room full of people shouting about God or the dead and she will be the one checking a pulse. She has spent most of her career as the doctor, the agent, the sheriff, the professional who arrives with a bag or a badge and a settled expression, and she plays these women without irony and without asking for our attention. In Midnight Mass (2021) her Dr Sarah Gunning carries the medical plot of a seven-part horror series with what we called tired good sense, which is about the highest compliment the part allows. Nobody builds a poster around that. That is rather the point of her.

She started at thirteen, in Desert Bloom (1986), and was one of the three young women of Mystic Pizza (1988). Then television, in long stretches: The X-Files, which she joined as Monica Reyes for its eighth and ninth seasons alongside Robert Patrick; The West Wing (2003–2006); Brotherhood (2006–2008), where she had a lead across three seasons; Halt and Catch Fire (2016–2017). Since The Haunting of Hill House (2018) she has been part of Mike Flanagan's repertory, three projects so far. There is no turn in the career, no wilderness and comeback. She has simply kept being asked back.

Joining The X-Files late was a thankless job. The programme belonged to David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, and our own review does not mention her, which tells its own story: the part was written to hold the fort, and she held it. The reservation about Gish is not that she does anything badly; nobody seems to think she does. It is that the parts she is given are nearly always the grounded professional, and that kind of part rarely gets the camera to itself. Flanagan is the exception. He casts the same faces again and again, and hers is one he has cast three times.

In Midnight Mass, a series we found handsome and far too talkative, we were grateful for her: while the island made speeches, she gave us tired good sense, and we trusted her for it. She has said of Flanagan that "he just tells stories that I believe in", and the trust plainly runs both ways. She carried three seasons of Brotherhood as a lead; someone should give her another. We suspect she would check the pulse first and then get on with it.
