Fi1m perspective

Asim Chaudhry gives failed businessman Chabuddy G a confidence that no evidence can disturb. We rate his detailed, affectionate comedy highly, though the smaller film parts tell us less about what he can do.

Chabuddy G smiles through another failed venture as though business were proceeding nicely. In People Just Do Nothing (2014), Asim Chaudhry makes the manager of pirate station Kurupt FM almost impossible to discourage. We laughed until it was uncomfortable, because his cheerful response to being turned down never allows the embarrassment to pass. Chaudhry stays with the man's optimism long after we have seen why it is misplaced.

The work began with Kurupt FM mockumentaries posted on YouTube around 2010–2011; the television series then ran from 2014 to 2018. Chaudhry co-created it with Allan Mustafa, Hugo Chegwin and Steve Stamp, and wrote for Chabuddy as well as playing him. Five series gave those characters room to become familiar without needing to become sensible. The continuation, People Just Do Nothing: Big in Japan (2021), also retained him as Chabuddy and a contributing writer.

The detail matters more than the mockumentary format, which is plainly borrowed, and the first series is slight. Chabuddy's accent mixes Pakistani inflections, patois and west London geezer talk; he sounds like a man from somewhere, rather than a collection of comic accents. The series is largely improvised, but Chaudhry keeps the character's response to disappointment consistent. Alongside Mustafa's thin-skinned Grindah and Chegwin's endlessly apologetic Beats, he supplies an optimism that survives every reason to abandon it. We can recognise the familiar documentary setup and still believe in the men.

The later film work often offers much shorter encounters, including a warehouse employee in Barbie (2023) and Scott in Gore Verbinski's Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die (2026). The latter is frequently funny, but stretches roughly ninety minutes of ideas across 134 minutes. Those appearances have not displaced Chabuddy as our reason to follow Chaudhry. We would welcome another series he can help write, with room for a character to become this specific.
