Babou Ceesay makes an impression through stillness, especially in ensembles that could easily encourage louder acting. We rate his restraint, and his television leads offer a useful way beyond the soldiers and authority figures of his film work.
Fi1m perspective
As Kumi Morrow in Alien: Earth (2025), Babou Ceesay makes us pay attention by doing little. He and Essie Davis both make stillness count in Noah Hawley’s series, where the strangeness needs to be taken seriously. We were horrified by the new creatures, and the cast’s seriousness helped make them frightening. Sydney Chandler carries the programme, but Ceesay shows how much an actor can contribute without demanding the same attention.
Soldiers and figures of authority recur in his film work. He is the Corporal in Yann Demange’s '71 (2014), then Sergeant Mushtaq Saddiq in Eye in the Sky (2015). The former is a film we recommend for its clear, punishing action and Jack O’Connell’s frightened central performance. Its plotting grows too convenient, but Ceesay fits an ensemble built to make the danger convincing. It is an effective use of him, even if it does not ask him to carry the film.
Television has increasingly given him that responsibility. In Damilola, Our Loved Boy (2016), he plays Richard Taylor, a father under pressure; John Ridley’s Guerrilla (2017) gives him the lead role of Marcus Hill. The convincing father in Damilola, Our Loved Boy suggests why casting him only for authority would be limiting. We Hunt Together (2020–22) and Wolfe (2021) continue the move towards television leads.
His restraint works best when there is already something on screen worth watching closely. Alien: Earth has that in its creatures and its serious-minded cast, but it slackens when the dialogue turns to what makes a person. Ceesay cannot make those stretches move faster simply by holding our attention. Try the series if science fiction is yours, with patience for the speeches.
