Bobby Moynihan is particularly funny when his characters have no idea how ridiculous they are. Animation suits that cheerful certainty, and Hoppers gives us good reason to want him in more substantial parts.
Fi1m perspective
King George in Hoppers (2026) sounds thoroughly satisfied with his authority. Bobby Moynihan voices him with enough self-importance to make the animal's shape funny before he has to do much else. Bryn Imagire's soft-edged designs help: the beavers are rounded and squashy, which makes George's certainty harder to take seriously. We laughed at the confidence Moynihan gives a creature shaped like a cushion.
The habit was already useful in Saturday Night Live (2008–2017), where his characters included Drunk Uncle and Anthony Crispino. He is an energetic physical comedian and a skilled improviser, often drawn to happy or oblivious figures. Animation was part of his work before that run ended: he voiced Chet in Monsters University (2013) and Forgetter Bobby in Inside Out (2015). The move towards more voice work after the sketch programme made sense.
Pete Docter's Inside Out is the stronger film, finding humour and feeling in a child's difficulty with change. The cast earns its warmth, even when the explanations slow things down. Moynihan's Forgetter Bobby is part of that ensemble, where a comic voice has to fit alongside the others. George allows more room for the self-satisfaction that makes Moynihan interesting, because the animal society takes its own hierarchies so seriously.
The limitation is how easily that talent can become just another supporting credit. In John Krasinski's IF (2024), he plays Jeremy, but the film is too short on jokes and too uncertain about its own rules to be a persuasive recommendation for his comedy. His part in Pierre Coffin's Minions & Monsters (2026) sits within another busy animated ensemble. That film has a lively first hour, then settles for familiar business.
The caution with Hoppers is that its plot carries too much and its last act is less bold than its first hour. We would like to hear Moynihan given more parts with George's prominence, rather than another name among the supporting voices. If the interest is Moynihan himself, start with the beaver.
