Brandon Perea is a useful comic actor in films that can badly need one. We like the humour he brings to Twisters, while remaining more certain of his value in a supporting cast than his prospects as a leading man.
Fi1m perspective
In Twisters (2024), Brandon Perea's Boone is the cameraman beside Glen Powell's Tyler, picking up most of the jokes Powell does not. We laughed at Boone's lines, and were grateful for them in a film that repeatedly interrupts its storms so the characters can be sad. Perea gives us good reason to welcome him in a supporting cast. He lands the comedy even when the leading man is the main reason to keep watching.
His first major part was Alfonso 'French' Sosa in The OA (2016–2019), before Jordan Peele's Nope (2022) brought him wider attention as Angel Torres. His background in jamskating and breakdancing informs the physical energy of his character work. The recurring opportunity has been a supporting role offering humour and a grounded presence alongside larger stars. That can sound like a modest assignment, but a film soon suffers when nobody is doing it properly.
Peele and Lee Isaac Chung have both allowed him to contribute to building a character. He helped shape Angel with Peele; Chung cast him as Boone after watching Nope and meeting him, without asking for an audition. That working relationship is worth noticing, though it does not make him the chief attraction in Twisters: Powell still is. Perea's achievement is smaller and worth acknowledging on its own terms. He gives a gloomy film jokes that work, which is precisely what it needs from him.
Perea takes the male lead as Nick Mendoza in Insidious: Out of the Further (2026). Jacob Chase finds useful scares in sofa cushions and dental work, but the family story struggles to keep moving through the supernatural explanations. Those weaknesses are not a reason to declare Perea unsuited to a bigger part, though they leave us cautious about recommending the film as evidence of what he can do. A larger role is not automatically a better opportunity. Start with Twisters if storm films appeal, and allow for rather too much gloom between the weather.
