Callum Turner is good company on screen, but his restraint interests us more than his charm. He can make a romance persuasive despite the writing, or take the showier part without crowding his fellow actor.

In One Night Only (2026), Callum Turner makes looking interested in Monica Barbaro seem easy. As Owen, he gives her Allie an agreeable partner, and their attraction survives dialogue that does neither of them much good. We enjoyed their company, then grew frustrated that the patchy jokes kept wasting it. This is a useful thing about Turner: he can persuade us to stay with a scene even when the writing gives us reasons to leave.
He began taking leads with John Boorman’s Queen and Country (2014) and the television series Glue (2014). Theseus Scamander in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) brought him into a larger franchise. Leads in The Capture (2019) and George Clooney’s The Boys in the Boat (2023) followed. He is frequently cast as charming or intense young men, with accent work and physical preparation often part of the job.
Mark Jenkin makes better use of him in Rose of Nevada (2026). Turner’s Liam takes a berth on a fishing boat alongside Nick Dyer, played by George MacKay, and Turner has the showier of the two roles. He is careful not to overplay it, leaving room for MacKay’s quieter manner. We can believe in the men doing the work before the film asks us to follow its time-slip mystery. When the middle drifts, the two actors and the sea remain enough to hold our interest.
The limitation is clearest back in One Night Only: being agreeable cannot make a timid romantic comedy funny. Turner and Barbaro find an ease together that suggests a less cluttered film might have given them plenty to do, but their chemistry cannot excuse this one’s muddle. We would like more parts that demand the care Jenkin gets from him, rather than ask him to make weak writing tolerable. Start with Rose of Nevada, allowing for a middle stretch that wanders.

Callum Robilliard Turner (born 15 February 1990) is a British actor. He began his career as a fashion model before moving into film and television, with early lead roles in the drama Queen and Country (2014) and the mystery series Glue (2014).
Turner played Theseus Scamander in the Fantastic Beasts films The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018) and The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022). His performance in the series The Capture (2019) earned a nomination for the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor. Subsequent roles include The Boys in the Boat (2023), Masters of the Air (2024) as Major John 'Bucky' Egan, and Liam in Rose of Nevada (2026).
