Camila Morrone makes a supporting character’s wishes matter as much as those of the leads. We rate her grounded, unshowy work in Daisy Jones & the Six, though the writing gives her less room than she deserves.
Fi1m perspective
In Daisy Jones & the Six (2023), Camila Morrone makes the third person in a romantic triangle someone whose wishes deserve consideration. Daisy and Billy are not the only people who matter, however often the series returns to them. We felt for Camila Dunne because Morrone makes it difficult to dismiss her needs as an inconvenience to somebody else’s romance. It is a persuasive performance in a programme that does not always know how much attention to give her.
That supporting role followed leading parts in films. Augustine Frizzell’s comedy Never Goin’ Back (2018) gave her an early co-lead as Jessie. Annabelle Attanasio’s Mickey and the Bear (2019) put her at the centre as Mickey Peck, a teenager caring for her father while seeking independence. Attanasio’s film is a useful reference for Morrone’s grounded way of playing vulnerability without making the character seem helpless. The earlier comedy suggests there is more to ask of her than patient endurance.
Her naturalism is an asset, though it needs writing that takes an interest in the person doing the enduring. Daisy Jones & the Six too often settles for returning to its central couple while the supporting characters wait. Suki Waterhouse’s Karen Sirko and Will Harrison’s Graham Dunne remain less substantial, and ten episodes make that unevenness harder to forgive. We recommend Morrone’s performance with more confidence than we recommend the series.
Patricia Arquette’s Gonzo Girl (2023) gave her another lead, as Alley Russo. Playing the businesswoman and intelligence asset Roxana Bolaños in the second series of The Night Manager (2026) takes her into different territory again. Try Daisy Jones & the Six if band drama appeals, but expect to wish it spent more time with her.
