Charlotte Stoudt can make a secret worth pursuing, but she is too willing to delay the pursuit. Pieces of Her is the clearest example: a family thriller whose strong opening gives way to explanations that weaken both suspense and feeling.
Fi1m perspective
In Pieces of Her (2022), Toni Collette has a mystery to carry, and the series keeps cutting away from her to explain the past. It is a useful place to start with Charlotte Stoudt, who created the series from Karin Slaughter's novel. The opening is urgent and promises a brisk family thriller. We grew impatient because the flashbacks kept interrupting the performance that was holding our attention.
Stoudt wrote and worked as executive story editor on Homeland (2011), then became a writer and supervising producer on House of Cards (2013). These credits place her among stories of concealed motives and people operating under pressure. We recommend the first three seasons of Homeland, whose early suspense has firm support from Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. We cannot credit one writer with everything that works in it.
In Fosse/Verdon (2019), she shared writing duties with Joel Fields, Tracey Scott Wilson and others. Director Thomas Kail has Michelle Williams giving Gwen Verdon wit and fury, while Sam Rockwell finds both charm and cruelty in Fosse. But the writers give him a man we have seen too often before. They fall back on the familiar difficult male artist, and keep the series bearing Verdon's name mostly concerned with her husband. Across eight episodes, the jumps through time become wearing, however good the actors are.
Pieces of Her was Stoudt's first series as creator, making it the clearest test here of her own storytelling choices. Its mother-daughter story offers more than a puzzle to solve. Yet as the explanations accumulate, the family drama gets no richer, and eight episodes feel longer than the material warrants. There is skill in making us want the next piece of information. The trouble is how often the series asks us to wait without giving us enough else to care about.
She became showrunner of The Morning Show (2019) from its third season in 2023, working with director and executive producer Mimi Leder. The media setting continues her interest in women trying to gain power inside institutions. It is a sensible fit for a writer drawn to secrets and their consequences. We would welcome a shorter thriller from her, with fewer trips into the past.
