Fi1m perspective

Chase Sui Wonders is a sharp ensemble actor who can keep a comedy working after its jokes begin to tire. The Studio makes a persuasive case for giving her more to do, and less familiar company.

In The Studio (2025), Chase Sui Wonders is one reason the professional panic stays funny. As Quinn Hackett, she and Ike Barinholtz's Sal Saperstein help keep Seth Rogen's anxious Matt from becoming the whole programme. We laughed at the professional chaos because the supporting cast kept it lively even when a joke was running out. Wonders has the useful comic skill of remaining worth watching when the writing is beginning to strain. She helps make an exhausting farce worth the effort.

An early part in Sofia Coppola's On the Rocks (2020) preceded the larger ensemble roles: Riley in Generation (2021), then Emma in Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022). The recurring interest is in characters who have more going on than they show the group. The horror-comedy of Bodies Bodies Bodies suited her ability to play self-seriousness sharply. There is a recognisable casting preference here for young characters negotiating how they appear to other people. It is useful territory, though repeated invitations to it can become a limitation.

The move to The Studio places her alongside established comic performers. Rogen is her director as well as her co-star, and her comfort with improvisation makes sense in this setting. Catherine O'Hara and Kathryn Hahn are especially welcome when the programme prolongs an embarrassment, but Wonders holds her own in their company. Our reservation is the programme's fondness for its own industry, which sometimes makes the satire too comfortable. That is a problem with the writing rather than a reason to fault her performance.

In Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex (2026), she plays Apple in a sex comedy we found funny and well cast. Our enthusiasm for that film has a limit: its plotting grows more complicated than the jokes need. We would welcome a role that asks more of Wonders without returning her to another young, privileged ensemble; there is no need to demand louder acting simply to make her contribution more conspicuous. Start with The Studio for the evidence that she can hold her own.
