Chris Tucker makes fast talk funny by letting us hear the confidence behind it and the trouble it can cause. We rate him most when a director gives that energy something specific to do.
Fi1m perspective
In Jackie Brown (1997), Chris Tucker's Beaumont Livingston tries to talk his way out of a car boot. He seems to believe that another sentence will settle the matter. We laughed, then felt uneasy, because Tucker makes Beaumont unable to hear how little his talking is helping. Tarantino gives him one early scene, and he makes its brevity an advantage.
Smokey in Friday (1995), alongside Ice Cube, established the fast-talking comic presence. The busy stretch that followed included the flamboyant Ruby Rhod in The Fifth Element (1997), before Rush Hour (1998) paired his Detective James Carter with Jackie Chan. The sequels followed in 2001 and 2007. That pairing makes straightforward use of his timing: an irrepressible talker needs someone to talk at. It is an effective arrangement, but we would be wary of treating it as the only thing Tucker can do.
Jackie Brown is the reason. Jackson's Ordell can make an explanation sound reasonable and frightening at once; Beaumont is too busy explaining himself to listen. Tarantino gives the talking a different purpose for each actor. Tucker's speed lets us hear a character's poor judgement, and that is more interesting than speed alone. We would not assume that giving him a longer scene would improve it.
After the Rush Hour sequels, the film appearances became intermittent, with supporting roles in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (2016). The latter gave him room for warmth amid a cynical ensemble. The gaps leave relatively few chances to see him work outside the familiar buddy pairing. We would like more parts that make use of that warmth.
As Howard White in Ben Affleck's Air (2023), Tucker worked on a real person's dialect and personality, with research informing the performance. That is a sensible task for an actor with such a recognisable delivery. We found the film quick, funny and well played, though its account of Nike signing Michael Jordan accepts the corporation's version too readily. For anyone who knows only Carter, Beaumont is the next performance to seek out.
