Fi1m perspective

Connie Nielsen looks like the one person in the scene who knows what is really going on, and two Ridley Scott films lean on that hard. Too many others cast her and then forgot to give her anything to do.

Watch Connie Nielsen listen. In Gladiator (2000) her Lucilla spends most of her scenes in rooms where men make speeches about Rome, and while they talk she is working out which of them will still be alive next week. The screenplay by David Franzoni, John Logan and William Nicholson likes its people to announce what they represent; Nielsen plays underneath the announcement, and the political scenes are at their best when she and Joaquin Phoenix are left to circle each other. Russell Crowe carries the film. Most of her scenes are spent watching him and Phoenix.

She arrived in Hollywood with The Devil's Advocate (1997), and Lucilla, three years later, made her name. It also fixed the pattern. She is often the one woman in a cast of men: Queen Hippolyta in Wonder Woman (2017) and the DC films that followed, Nina Yorkin opposite Robin Williams in One Hour Photo (2002), Becca Mansell alongside Bob Odenkirk in Nobody (2021). She has said she resisted being cast as the decorative blonde and went looking for parts with more in them.

What she does is hold still and let you see her thinking, and it is rarer than it sounds. It suits authority: queens, emperors' daughters, women with a household to protect and no army of their own. The trouble is that the films seldom follow the thought anywhere. By her own account, early Hollywood parts she was cast in as a lead shrank in the cutting room, and the record since is mostly supporting work in films built around somebody else. She has spoken of wanting to show the gap between who women actually are and how they are usually written for the screen.

Gladiator II (2024) brought her back to Lucilla twenty-four years on, and Scott found her, again, the most watchable person in the arena and gave her almost nothing to say there. She does a great deal with looks across the sand. We caught ourselves following her eyes rather than the swords, and then felt a flash of irritation on her behalf, because the film plainly had no plan for whatever it was she was seeing. It was her second film with Scott, and the second time he cast her as Lucilla.

Two Ridley Scott films have used her as the person who understands Rome better than anyone in it holding a weapon. Someone should let her speak first.
