Biography

Dalton Trumbo was an American screenwriter and novelist. Born in Montrose, Colorado, he began his career in Hollywood in the 1930s and became one of the highest-paid screenwriters by the 1940s, with credits including Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) and Kitty Foyle (1940).

In 1947, Trumbo was one of the Hollywood Ten who refused to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee. He was blacklisted and continued to work under pseudonyms such as Robert Rich and others. His uncredited contributions included the screenplays for Roman Holiday (1953) and The Brave One (1956), both of which won Academy Awards.

Trumbo received public credit for Spartacus (1960) and Exodus (1960). Later works include the screenplay for Papillon (1973). He died in Los Angeles in 1976.
