Dan Stevens plays men who are pleasant a beat too long. Since leaving Downton Abbey he has built a career on grins that do not quite reach the eyes, and he is best when a script trusts him to be frightened as well as funny.
Fi1m perspective
The panic is in the hands. In Legion (2017), Dan Stevens plays David Haller as a polite, frightened man who apologises for things that were not his fault and lets nothing show above the wrist. Seven years later, in Abigail (2024), his Frank is a former policeman with an American snarl and a grin that says he has read the script and knows how much fun he is having. The two men have nothing in common except the actor, and in both cases the face is agreeable and the body is not.
He came up through British theatre and television after Cambridge, in adaptations such as The Line of Beauty (2006) and Sense and Sensibility (2008), and then played Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey (2010–2012), which made him known everywhere and threatened to keep him in a wing collar for life. He left after the third series and went to America, where The Guest (2014) cast him as a charismatic killer called David and told everyone what he was for. Since then he has been the Beast in Beauty and the Beast (2017), a man who cannot trust his own memories in Legion (2017–2019), and the lead in Gareth Evans's folk horror Apostle (2018). The year 2024 alone brought Abigail, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and Cuckoo. "Straight leading men don't tend to be that interesting," he has said, and he has arranged a career around not being one.
What works is the mismatch. Noah Hawley gets the most out of him: the pilot of Legion builds to a kiss in a hospital corridor while the corridor comes apart, and we sat forward, because the series had spent forty minutes teaching us to believe nothing and Stevens's careful, apologetic face made us badly want that one thing to be real. The first eight episodes are among the best television made from a comic; the nineteen after them are not, though that is Hawley's problem more than his. In Abigail he and Alisha Weir have the film between them, and Radio Silence let him be exactly as broad as the house requires. He can also build a whole comic character out of an accent and a walk, as in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020) and Cuckoo (2024).
What does not work is what happens when the script gives him nothing to hide. In Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire his veterinarian Trapper is a drawl and a set of shirts so loud they become a running joke, and he wears them with the ease of a man who has stopped reading his own scenes. The grin without the fear underneath it is just a grin, and a blockbuster will happily pay for one.
Start with the first run of Legion, then The Guest. After that, check who is behind the camera before you check the shirt.
