Fi1m perspective

Daniel Brühl can make a controlling son or a vain suitor seem like someone worth trusting. We rate him for keeping those men believable, and would rather see him challenged than routinely cast as the villain.

Daniel Brühl's Fredrick Zoller looks boyish as he courts Mélanie Laurent's watchful Shosanna in Inglourious Basterds (2009). His vanity takes a little longer to register, which makes the courtship more uncomfortable than an immediately obvious villain would. Zoller has already starred in a film about himself; Brühl does not need to underline the self-regard. We rate him most highly when he gives flawed men enough charm for us to understand why somebody might trust them.

Good Bye, Lenin (2003), his breakthrough under director Wolfgang Becker, shows how well the same approach works in a sympathetic role. As Alex, he plays a son whose love for his mother does not make his deceptions any less troubling. We were moved by Alex's devotion because Brühl makes his wish to protect his mother convincing, even while he controls what she is allowed to know. Katrin Sass gives the mother the dignity the part needs. Together they stop the comedy from becoming a comfortable invitation to laugh at somebody being fooled.

The film keeps adding emphasis the performances do not need. Yann Tiersen's score presses the tenderness, while the explanatory voice-over repeats what Brühl and Sass have already conveyed. Peter R. Adam's editing lets the complications accumulate for too long. Their scenes remain worth waiting for through the slower stretches, but the film would benefit from leaving more of the explanation to its actors.

After Inglourious Basterds, he moved more often towards antagonists. He has since played Niki Lauda in Rush (2013) and Helmut Zemo in Captain America: Civil War (2016), while continuing to work in European cinema. His facility with languages and accents helps him move between productions without being confined to one nationality on screen. The risk is repetition: charm that conceals something unpleasant can become a familiar casting instruction, and we would rather not know what to expect when he arrives. Start with Good Bye, Lenin, and forgive the film its need to explain feelings that Brühl and Sass have already made clear.
