Fi1m perspective

Dario Scardapane is a writer who takes over other people's characters and makes them fit: a Western in 1993, two Marvel vigilantes since. He is good at keeping a long story moving and less good at deciding which of its stories matters.

The best things in Daredevil: Born Again (2025) are two men who have known each other for years talking across a table, and fights that still hurt to watch. Neither is a writer's invention. Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio brought Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk with them, and what Dario Scardapane did, as creator and showrunner, was decide where those two would be seven years on and build a season of capable crime television around them. He does that part well. The plotting is familiar and the pacing uneven, and the series never becomes more surprising than its first episode promises, which is why we recommended it with caveats rather than warmly.

That is the shape of his career. Scardapane was a punk musician in Seattle and then a journalist in Los Angeles before he wrote Posse (1993) with Sy Richardson for Mario Van Peebles. The Western has a pursuit, a hunt for gold, a railroad scheme, a romance each for Little J and Jesse, flashbacks that keep returning to the same night, and a frame in which an old man tells it all to two reporters. Each gets a scene and a half. We were impatient with it, and the impatience was the script's doing: six films' worth of incident and none given room, so the revenge it is heading towards arrives as one more item on a list.

Television suited him better, because television gives a writer the hours he keeps trying to cram into two. He created Trauma (2009), a medical drama with Cliff Curtis, and wrote on The Bridge (2013) and Jack Ryan (2018). On The Punisher (2017–2019) he wrote and produced for Jon Bernthal, and the two worked together again on the Daredevil revival. In between came Memory (2022), a thriller for Martin Campbell and Liam Neeson. He was brought in to run Daredevil: Born Again in 2023, after the series had already been overhauled once, oversaw two seasons, and left during post-production on the third in 2026. Nearly everything on that list was started by someone else.

So what he is good at is arriving late. He writes for actors who know their parts better than he does and lets them, and with directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead he found a tone for the revival that keeps the characters busy. He has said of the series that he "just didn't want to hear characters grousing about their lot in life. I wanted to see them doing things," and the show does keep them doing things. The weakness is the one Posse showed first: when the material is his to shape, he cannot bear to leave anything out, and the pieces end up competing for the same hour.

He has yet to finish a show whose characters he invented. We would like to see him try, if only to find out which of the six stories he would keep.
