Fi1m perspective

Dave Sheridan’s gift is for broad physical foolishness delivered without embarrassment. We like him most when that commitment keeps an ensemble comedy moving, although Scary Movie also shows how often the writing leaves him to do the work.

As Doofy in Scary Movie (2000), Dave Sheridan makes a virtue of being prepared to look ridiculous. The playing is broad and physical, with little concern for appearing dignified. Keenen Ivory Wayans’s spoof needs that energy, particularly when the writing starts asking the cast to compensate for missing jokes. We enjoyed watching Sheridan and Regina Hall keep it lively through those thin patches. The gross-out material remains unreliable, and our affection for the effort does not make this a comedy we can recommend without checking someone’s tolerance first.

Ghost World (2001) places him, as Doug, in Terry Zwigoff’s sharply funny treatment of teenage discontent. We rate this film considerably higher, though our enthusiasm centres on Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi and the loneliness they make felt. Sheridan’s supporting appearance belongs to a different sort of comedy from the parody that established him. We would not point to Doug as the fullest account of what Sheridan does.

His subsequent work has moved between studio comedy and horror, largely in supporting roles. The Wayans connection continues through Little Man (2006), where he plays Rosco, and A Haunted House (2013), where he plays Bob. Horror work includes Rob Zombie’s The Devil’s Rejects (2005), with Sheridan as Officer Ray Dobson. He has made his own material too, creating and starring in the prank series Buzzkill (1996).

Returning to Doofy in Scary Movie (2026) is understandable for an actor whose reputation remains so closely tied to that part. The risk is that familiarity becomes enough, when the appeal was the work Sheridan put into being ridiculous. We want scripts that give him something to play rather than simply counting on recognition. For an introduction, try the 2000 film if broad physical comedy suits, and do not expect the jokes to be as dependable as the cast.
