Fi1m perspective

Denise Gough is at her most persuasive when a character’s determination becomes unsettling. We rate the precision she brings to Andor; H Is for Hawk is a reminder that her supporting parts do not always give her enough to do.

In Andor (2022), Denise Gough makes Dedra Meero seem thoroughly serious about getting ahead. She lets us understand the character’s ambition without asking us to like her. We were unsettled by that seriousness, because Gough makes Dedra’s determination persuasive without continually signalling that she is someone to fear. The performance has force without the constant emphasis that can make an antagonist so tiring to watch.

Her breakthrough came on stage, playing Emma in Duncan Macmillan’s People, Places and Things (2015) for director Jeremy Herrin. She followed it with Harper Pitt in Angels in America (2017). Her reputation for technically precise, physically demanding stage work developed alongside a growing television presence, through Paula (2017) and Too Close (2021). Andor makes a useful case against assuming that an actor known for intensity will always need to be conspicuous.

Tony Gilroy’s Andor gives her conversations worth acting, and colleagues whose delivery differs enough to keep those conversations interesting. Alongside Genevieve O’Reilly’s tightly controlled Mon Mothma and Stellan Skarsgård’s forceful Luthen Rael, Gough helps make long exchanges hold our attention. None needs to make every line sound momentous, even when there is a great deal to explain. We recommend the series, despite an opening that takes too long to settle, because this patient attention to performance pays off.

H Is for Hawk (2025) shows the limit of what she can do with a supporting part written mainly to serve someone else. As Christina in Philippa Lowthorpe’s film, she is one of the people supplied to draw Helen out of her flat and discuss how she is coping. The writing gives these characters too little to do beyond checking on Helen, leaving Gough with little opportunity to make Christina interesting in her own right. We would start with Andor and hope for more parts that give Gough something to pursue, rather than merely someone to prompt.
