Fi1m perspective

A stage actor who has spent a quarter of a century on television as the husband, the detective or the man with the badge. Steady, plausible and almost never handed a scene of his own; the limit has nearly always been the writing, not him.

Watch Dominic Fumusa in Dexter: Resurrection (2025) and you will see what television has decided he is for. As Detective Melvin Oliva he stands at desks, asks the questions the plot needs asked and hands the scene back to someone with more to do. He does it without a false note. He also does it, as we said when we reviewed the series, with nothing to play but procedure, and the show keeps cutting back to him as if filling a quota. It is a fair picture of the career: a dependable man in the scene, rarely the reason the scene was written.

He came to the screen late and from the stage. After an MFA in 1994 he worked in Chicago theatre, made his Broadway debut in the 1998 revival of Wait Until Dark, and originated parts in New York premieres including Richard Greenberg's Take Me Out and Sarah Ruhl's Stage Kiss and Passion Play. Television took him in through the side door of guest spots, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, Law & Order: SVU, and then kept him for seven seasons as Kevin Peyton, the husband in Nurse Jackie (2009-2015), 79 episodes opposite Edie Falco. He has said there is a before and an after that job, and the credits bear him out: recurring arcs on Homeland, The Purge and Godfather of Harlem, and film parts in Focus (2015), as a security contractor in 13 Hours (2016) and as George Tenet in The Report (2019).

What works is the solidity. Put him beside a volatile lead and he makes the lead's volatility read as real, because he reacts to it like a person rather than a plot device. Nurse Jackie needed exactly that for Falco, who in our view was the reason to watch a programme that circled the same ground for several seasons, and Clyde Phillips, who ran that show, has now hired him three times. What does not work is what happens when nobody writes the part. In the middle episodes of Dexter: Resurrection we were irritated, and some of the irritation was on his behalf: an actor who has carried new plays in New York was being used to move exposition from one side of a table to the other.

He has been honest about where he would rather be. "I love film and television, but I breathe when I'm on stage." The cameras get the detective; the theatre gets the actor. Until a series decides the man with the badge has a life, that is probably how it will stay.
