Edi Gathegi makes capable people entertaining through deadpan humour and quiet authority. We like him most when he has a job to get on with; Superman benefits from his presence even as it becomes crowded and noisy.
Fi1m perspective
In Superman (2025), Edi Gathegi's Mr Terrific gets on with things while the film keeps finding somebody else to introduce. His deadpan manner makes competence entertaining, which is useful in a supporting cast where several characters have little beyond a costume or a running joke. We were relieved to spend time with him because the surrounding bustle was wearing us down. James Gunn gives him the most to do among the other heroes. Gathegi earns the attention without making a fuss about it.
The same businesslike quality has a less reassuring use in Gone Baby Gone (2007), where he plays Cheese, a drug lord. Gathegi can make criminal menace feel like a matter of professional routine, keeping a character watchable without asking us to like him. Casey Affleck and Amy Ryan carry Ben Affleck's film through some increasingly contrived plotting, but Cheese shows an early use for Gathegi's controlled detachment.
His franchise work then included Laurent in Twilight (2008) and Darwin in X-Men: First Class (2011). Those early roles did not always give him much room to develop a character. Television became a substantial part of the work, with Ronald Dacey in StartUp (2016–2018), then Dev Ayesa in For All Mankind from 2022. That is a career worth looking at beyond the supporting roles in large film ensembles.
What Gunn gets right is to give the intelligence Gathegi projects something to do. Mr Terrific earns his share of Superman, although the film still adds enough characters and crises to make its last act mostly noise. The caution is that competence can become the only thing a part asks of him; we would welcome writing that makes more demands on that calm authority. He need not be confined to being the useful man in somebody else's story. Try Superman for his dry humour, if you have patience for a superhero film that keeps adding people.
