Edward Rowe can make an angry man understandable without making him agreeable. Bait gives us the strongest reason to rate him: a grounded actor whose humour keeps a difficult character human, even when the filmmaking grows insistent.
Fi1m perspective
Martin Ward is angry in Bait (2019), and Edward Rowe never tidies that anger into something noble. He lets resentment look awkward and occasionally funny, giving us a man whose company might be a trial even when we understand his grievance. We laughed, then felt slightly unkind: Rowe allows Martin to be undignified while keeping his troubles serious. Amid Mark Jenkin's rough monochrome images and dislocated sound, the performance gives us someone recognisably human to stay with.
The humour has some history behind it. Before his dramatic breakthrough in Bait, Rowe worked in stand-up and Cornish comedy videos as Kernow King, as well as local theatre. That background helps here, since the humour comes from Martin's resentment rather than a pause in the drama to supply a joke. Jenkin gives him enough room for the anger and the comedy to count. Rowe keeps Bait worth watching when the insistent editing starts getting ahead of the people.
The subsequent work has often been in supporting parts, including television appearances in The Witcher and Beyond Paradise, and further films with Jenkin. In Enys Men (2022), he plays the Boatman; in Rose of Nevada (2026), he is Mike Bruffin. In the latter, Rowe belongs in the village, one of an ensemble whose faces never seem imported for the occasion. That is valuable casting, though it gives us less to say about him than Bait does.
The risk is that looking right for these places becomes all he is asked to do. Our case for him rests on the larger part: Bait lets his humour complicate a man who could have been played as nothing but angry. That is a better reason to follow an actor than the usefulness of his accent. Start with Bait, allowing for editing that sometimes works harder than it needs to.
