Fi1m perspective

Emma Myers gives Wednesday the warmth it needs and Jenna Ortega someone worth playing against. We rate that comic partnership; the Minecraft film is less persuasive evidence of what she can do when the writing gives her a chance.

Beside Jenna Ortega's severe heroine in Wednesday (2022), Emma Myers plays Enid Sinclair, the optimistic werewolf roommate. The contrast is obvious, but Myers gives the cheerfulness enough feeling to keep it from becoming a single repeated joke. We warmed to Enid because Myers makes her optimism feel sincere, even when it is being used to make Wednesday's severity funny. Joy Sunday, as Bianca Barclay, helps make this wider company engaging too. Ortega remains the reason to watch, but Myers is an important reason the school scenes survive the predictable mystery.

Enid was the breakthrough, following supporting work including Girl in the Basement (2021). Family Switch (2023), in which Myers plays CC Walker, put her into family comedy, while Pip Fitz-Amobi in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder (2024) brought a mystery-series lead. That performance brings panic and determination alongside vulnerability, giving her more to work with than the job of keeping somebody else company. It is a useful direction for an actor whose most familiar part depends so much on her relationship with another performer.

Jared Hess's Minecraft film (2025) is less encouraging. Myers plays Natalie, older sister to Sebastian Eugene Hansen's Henry, in a portal adventure alongside Jack Black's shouting Steve and Jason Momoa's former arcade champion Garrett. Hess gets some of his oddness into the film, and Momoa is funny, but a game about building whatever you like has become a tightly prescribed adventure. The objection is to the writing and the relentless noise; there is little here to strengthen the case for Myers, and no reason to make her responsible for the disappointment.

The risk is being cast as the cheerful one so often that there is little left for her to discover in the part. In Wednesday, her rapport with Ortega makes that casting work, and the ensemble supplies enough humour to keep familiar plotting watchable. More roles that let Myers be frightened, determined or difficult would be welcome, provided they give those feelings something specific to attach to. Start with Wednesday for her, with the caveat that the school company is more rewarding than the mystery.
