Erica Tremblay slows a scene down and holds on a face until the silence does the work. It is a small habit, and on the crowded frontier of Little House on the Prairie it was enough to mark hers as the episode worth watching.
Fi1m perspective
The thing Tremblay does is wait. On Little House on the Prairie (2026) five directors share eight hours, and most of them hurry, as if each had been handed a list of incidents from the books and told to get through it by the credits. Her episode slows down. It holds on a face after the line has been said, and it lets a silence run to the end instead of cutting away to spare us. The adults get the best writing in the run, and part of the reason is that somebody was finally standing still long enough to hear it.
She came up through documentary. There were shorts from 2007, then Heartland (2012) and In the Turn (2014), the second about transgender youth and a roller derby community, and a spell in corporate video before Sundance's Native Filmmakers Lab took her on in 2018. Out of that came Little Chief (2020), a short with Lily Gladstone, and then Reservation Dogs (2021), where she wrote, directed and served as executive story editor from 2021 to 2023. We rate that series highly. It is also a show made by many hands under Sterlin Harjo, and we would not pretend to know which of its quiet moments are hers.
Her feature debut, Fancy Dance (2023), written with Miciana Alise and again starring Gladstone, is the film her admirers point to: a story about a missing woman and a family that speaks Cayuga on screen. We have not reviewed it and will not judge it here. She has also written and directed on Dark Winds, the noir series set in the Navajo Nation. What links all of it is plain enough. She is interested in Indigenous women and families as people with jobs, jokes and a language of their own, and she has said that when elders saw Cayuga in a film, “Some of them were crying because they’re in their 80s and 90s and they’ve never seen their language in a film before.”
The documentary years show, in the good way and the awkward one. She trusts a face to carry a scene, and she is right more often than not. But on someone else's series she is one hour among many, and a calm hour in a show that has elsewhere decided to keep moving can read as a pause rather than a point. We were relieved when her episode of Little House arrived, and then a little sorry, because it showed how much the other seven hours were rushing past.
Most of her running time so far is on other people's programmes. We would like to see her with a whole story again, and no one else's list to get through.
