Fi1m perspective

Gale Hansen is worth remembering for the humour he brings to Charlie Dalton’s defiance in Dead Poets Society. His best-known performance gives an earnest school drama a welcome streak of mischief.

Charlie Dalton enjoys being a nuisance, and Gale Hansen makes that enjoyment count. In Peter Weir’s Dead Poets Society (1989), his rebellious student brings humour to the business of challenging authority. We warmed to Charlie because Hansen makes rule-breaking look like fun, rather than an obligation imposed by an improving school drama. He gives the ensemble someone willing to be troublesome without asking for our solemn approval. That is a useful quality in a film so concerned with what its young people ought to learn.

Zelig (1983) offers a much smaller foothold: Hansen’s part is Freshman #1 in Woody Allen’s mock-documentary. We rate that film for its technical care and modest performances, but it would be a stretch to treat this minor credit as an early statement of Hansen’s abilities. Charlie is the part on which a considered view of his acting has to rest. The jump between those two credits is substantial, from a small appearance to a distinctive place within Weir’s young cast.

Weir gets something valuable from Hansen’s mischievousness: the appeal of rebellion need not be explained when someone appears to be enjoying it. The limitation is in the film around him, whose moral lessons are too tidy. Robin Williams and the young cast make the sentiment convincing, and Hansen’s humour helps keep their earnestness from becoming uniform. We would not claim that he rescues the film, which does not need rescuing, or that one conspicuous performance proves an actor can do everything.

He followed it with supporting film work, including John “Sully” Sullivan in Shaking the Tree (1990), and played Samuel “Stroke” Dexter in the television series Class of '96 (1993). Those roles did not bring comparable visibility, leaving a screen career still discussed chiefly through Charlie. That makes sweeping claims about Hansen unhelpful, but it is no reason to undervalue a well-judged contribution to an ensemble. Return to Dead Poets Society for the boy who finds misbehaviour worth enjoying.
