Fi1m perspective

George Wendt makes a prepared joke sound like something that has only just occurred to a tired man. As Norm Peterson in Cheers, he makes the people beside him funnier without having to raise his voice.

Norm Peterson comes into the bar in Cheers (1982), everyone calls his name, and George Wendt answers with a wisecrack. The punchline sounds like ordinary conversation. We laughed because his world-weariness makes the greeting feel like another small demand on a man who came in for a beer. He lets the joke arrive without making a fuss about it.

He stayed with Cheers throughout its 1982–1993 run, allowing the supporting part to become central through familiarity. Norm might be an accountant, a painter or a beer taster; Wendt kept the conversational ease. That consistency is worth more here than an actor's determination to surprise us every week. His directing work on the programme was confined to one episode, Airport V (1988).

That ease matters beside John Ratzenberger's Cliff Clavin, whose certainty keeps inviting an argument. Wendt leaves room for Cliff to be tiresome without making the whole exchange tiresome. Rhea Perlman's Carla Tortelli can get force into a short reply, and Norm's less emphatic presence makes her briskness funnier. We rate the ensemble highly because its members do different jobs. When the programme repeats a quarrel without finding anything fresh in it, though, even this cast cannot quite disguise the thin writing.

After Cheers, the recurring barfly and everyman parts became a restriction, and The George Wendt Show (1995) lasted only a few episodes. In Spice World (1997), he has a cameo as a film producer. That film earns its evening through the songs and the five women together, despite the untidy comedy. The celebrity jokes offer less, and it would be unfair to ask such a small part to tell us much about Wendt.

Stage work gave him different parts: Yvan in Art (1998) and Edna Turnblad in Hairspray (2007). Those credits are reasons not to mistake Norm for the whole actor. Start with Cheers, but pay attention after the entrance, when he has other people's jokes to help along.
