Fi1m perspective

Geraldine Viswanathan can make a quiet woman holding her ground as funny as the louder person beside her. We rate her comic judgement; the films have not always given her enough to do.

In Drive-Away Dolls (2024), Geraldine Viswanathan's Marian reads in motel beds while Margaret Qualley's Jamie goes looking for company. Viswanathan lets the book occupy her without making Marian seem merely stranded outside the fun. We warmed to her in those scenes because her choice to stay put feels considered, rather than supplied for somebody else to laugh at. There is comic skill in keeping that choice clear while a louder performance takes up the space beside her.

Blockers (2018) established her in comedy; the dramatic lead in Hala (2019) followed soon enough to discourage any narrow assumptions. The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020) gave her a romantic-comedy lead, while Miracle Workers (2019–2023) provided four seasons of anthology work alongside Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi. The movement between reserved and more assertive women matters more than the change of genre. We would not want the deadpan to become the whole job. She is worth watching when a character needs time to think, too.

Ethan Coen's Drive-Away Dolls gives her that time, though the road comedy around her is thin enough to be forgotten by morning. Qualley supplies the swagger, and Viswanathan makes Marian's reserve an equally deliberate way of behaving. They carry the film together; we wish there were more for them to carry. Coen gets something tender from their pairing without requiring Viswanathan to abandon the restraint that made her interesting. It is a persuasive performance in a film we can only recommend with reservations.

Thunderbolts\ (2025) is the stronger film, but its use of her is frustratingly slight. As Mel, assistant to Julia Louis-Dreyfus's Valentina, she has its sharpest deadpan and scarcely a handful of lines, while the script by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo keeps giving her boss the same limited set of responses. That hardly tests what she can do with a character, though it confirms how precisely she can land a small part. For a proper introduction, start with Drive-Away Dolls* and forgive the plot.
