Fi1m perspective

Gina Yashere makes authority funny by playing it with complete conviction. We like her firmness and comic timing, though familiar material can leave her relying too heavily on the force of her delivery.

Lura Thok does not know she is funny, and Gina Yashere is sensible enough not to tell her. In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy (2026), she plays the Klingon-Jem’Hadar cadet master and first officer with a strictness that leaves room for comedy. The timing does the work without making the character less serious. It is a good use of the no-nonsense manner familiar from her stand-up.

Her early British stand-up and panel work established that bluntness, but the significant change came when she gained more say in the writing. The American breakthrough of Last Comic Standing (2007) preceded Bob Hearts Abishola (2019–2024), which she co-created with Chuck Lorre. She worked on the sitcom as a writer and later co-showrunner, while playing Kemi, the best friend of Abishola, played by Folake Olowofoyeku. Her work shaping the programme’s Nigerian cultural detail matters as much to an account of her screen career as the performance.

The limitation is clearest in the stand-up, where some observations are formulaic and the energy has to compensate. Strong delivery can keep a routine moving without making its subject any more interesting. Voice work, including Gravelle in Early Man (2018), makes use of her clear, distinctive sound. Thok offers a more interesting prospect for her screen work: comic timing within a role whose duties are meant to be taken seriously.

We warmed to Starfleet Academy because its adolescent troubles mostly earn their place beside the diplomacy. Holly Hunter steadies the series, though the young ensemble deserves more equal attention. Yashere’s suitability for Thok is one reason to watch, not a claim that the occasionally awkward school drama has solved all its problems. We would be wary of writing that turned the cadet master into a succession of punchlines. The next useful test would be a part that asks Yashere to hold our attention at a lower volume.
