Himesh Patel plays the man who is not the hero and knows it: the crewman who has stopped believing, the stranger who does not know what to do with the child. He does less than anyone around him and we watch him anyway.
Fi1m perspective
Watch what Himesh Patel does with a telephone in the first episode of Station Eleven (2021). His sister is telling him what is filling the hospitals, the snow is coming down, a small girl he has just met is standing beside him, and Hiro Murai's camera stays on his face and does not cut. He does almost nothing. He listens, and his face goes from polite to grey, and the city behind him carries on not knowing. A few minutes later he is pushing a train of trolleys through a supermarket, and we realised we were frightened by a man buying tinned soup. That is what he does: he plays ordinary people at the moment ordinariness stops being available to them, and he never lets you see him work.
He came up the slow way. Nine years as Tamwar Masood on EastEnders (2007–2016), after an audition at 16, then the sitcom Damned and stage work, and then Danny Boyle put him at the front of Yesterday (2019) as Jack Malik, a struggling musician. He sang live and carried the film; most critics were cool on the picture and warm on him, which is the pattern that has held since. Christopher Nolan gave him a small part as Mahir in Tenet (2020), Adam McKay a supporting one as Phillip in Don't Look Up (2021), and Patrick Somerville gave him Jeevan and ten episodes to fill.
Nolan cast him again as Eurylochus in The Odyssey (2026), and used him properly this time. Eurylochus is the crewman who has stopped believing the captain and cannot say so, and Patel plays him opposite Matt Damon's Odysseus, a man slow to answer and quick to anger, with the same quality he brought to Jeevan: he knows something is wrong and he is not entitled to say it. In a story full of people offering Odysseus things, he is the one holding something back, and in a film shot enormous and acted quietly he is one of the reasons to keep looking at the faces rather than the horizon.
The reservation is that nobody has yet asked him to fail. His directors have known how to place a still man in a loud frame, and the parts have been variations on the same decent, watchful person who is right about the danger and powerless to act on it. We would like to see someone hand him a character who is unreasonable, or vain, or simply bad, and find out whether the stillness is a choice or a limit. Until then he is the actor you notice on the second viewing, which is a compliment to him and a small failing of the people doing the casting.
