Fi1m perspective

Huh Joon-ho is persuasive as the man others defer to, capable of suggesting loyalty or menace without making either look simple. We value him most in ensembles that give his authority something to do.

Huh Joon-ho often plays the man whose authority the others have to reckon with. As Ahn Hyeon in Kim Eun-hee’s Kingdom (2019), he brings that weight to a series which takes its court as seriously as its plague of the undead. It is a good setting for an actor who can make authority feel complicated. We were unsettled by Kingdom because hunger and ambition make the human threat as persuasive as the supernatural one.

His breakthrough came as Sergeant Jo in Silmido (2003), followed by historical television as Hae Mo-su in Jumong (2006) and crime work including The Merciless (2017). The settings change, but the demand for a forceful supporting presence persists. His later television work makes the difference between a substantial role and a recognisable casting choice particularly clear. The risk is that casting him as another stern authority figure becomes an excuse to leave the character at that.

His theatre and musical background informs a grounded physical approach, useful in parts that could otherwise amount to delivering orders. In Escape from Mogadishu (2021), as Rim Yong-soo, his value lies in helping to hold an ensemble together. He can give a group a convincing centre without requiring everyone else to look negligible. We rate that skill more highly than the ability to look forbidding, which can be all such roles ask of an actor.

Jason Kim’s Bloodhounds (2023) shows the limitation: Huh appears as Choi Tae-ho, but the drama is too lightly developed to make full use of him or the wider cast. Its grounded, forceful fights earn an action fan’s evening, and we recommend it on those terms. Across eight episodes, however, predictable plotting leaves the actors with too little to sustain between confrontations. An authoritative performance still needs a character worth following through the quieter stretches. Start with Kingdom; come to Bloodhounds for the fights rather than a full account of what Huh can do.
