Hunter Doohan is persuasive as a young man trying to keep his troubles to himself. We value his understated charm, but his work needs fuller characters than Evil Dead Burn supplies.
Fi1m perspective
Hunter Doohan’s characters often seem approachable before they seem troubled. He is useful casting for stories that need us to take an apparently ordinary young man seriously, and his charm helps without demanding attention. We find him persuasive when there is some uncertainty beneath that friendliness. A thinly written part still looks thinly written when he plays it, which places some limits on what we would recommend for his presence alone.
The early television roles offered useful variations on that apparent ordinariness. In Truth Be Told (2019), he played teenage Warren, the younger version of Aaron Paul’s character. Your Honour (2020) gave him a substantial main role as Adam Desiato opposite Bryan Cranston, with family drama making use of his ability to convey internal conflict. We would welcome another part that gave him comparable room to make a young man’s difficulties worth our attention.
Wednesday (2022), in which he plays Tyler Galpin, brought him wider recognition. We like the programme for the comedy Jenna Ortega finds in the heroine’s severity and for the cast’s warmth and mischief, despite a familiar supernatural school mystery. Doohan’s approachable manner belongs comfortably in that company, giving us another reason to stay with a story whose plotting is less distinctive than its cast. He need not dominate the ensemble to be useful within it.
Evil Dead Burn (2026) gives him less to do as Joseph. Sébastien Vaniček supplies brutality, while Souheila Yacoub and Tandi Wright get the characters with enough substance to hold our attention. Doohan plays his single trait competently, but cannot make the part feel fuller than it is. We grew numb by the hour mark, as the gore kept coming without making the domestic-abuse allegory any more convincing. It is not a useful test of his ability to convey conflicting feelings when the writing gives him so little to work with.
The next useful step would be a part that gives him more to do before the trouble starts. His work in family drama offers enough reason to be interested, without pretending that every genre appearance has added to the case. We would rather see him given a difficult conversation than another corridor to run down.
