Fi1m perspective

James Callis makes conflicted, self-interested men worth watching without asking us to approve of them. We rate his nervous energy, particularly in Battlestar Galactica, where it gives an otherwise solemn ensemble a welcome disturbance.

In Battlestar Galactica (2004), James Callis's Gaius Baltar brings nervous energy to an ensemble that has plenty of solemnity already. We found his restlessness a relief amid all that gloom. He helps the series sustain its atmosphere of suspicion without making everyone seem interchangeable. That is a particular sort of usefulness in an ensemble: he can disturb the prevailing mood without making it impossible to take the story seriously.

Tom in Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), his film debut, gave him a recurring supporting part in a comedy we recommend for Renée Zellweger and Hugh Grant. Baltar, first played in the 2003 miniseries, was the breakthrough, with the series running from 2004 to 2009. The longer stretch suited his ability to let a conflicted character change without losing the vulnerability. His strength is making self-interest recognisably human, rather than treating it as sufficient instruction to play a villain.

The reservation is that we can sometimes see him working. Tricia Helfer's Number Six holds our attention with less apparent effort, and beside her Callis's agitation is more conspicuous. Katee Sackhoff's roughness as Starbuck and Jamie Bamber's guarded manner as Apollo make his nervousness feel particular to Baltar, rather than the programme's default way of showing unease. He works well here, though we would not want the whole cast at the same pitch.

Later television work includes the voice of Alucard in Castlevania (2017) and Maurice Picard in Star Trek: Picard (2022), followed by Claude Whelan in Slow Horses from 2024. Those credits offer other places to look, but Baltar remains the performance on which we would base a recommendation. There is a risk of so distinctive a role becoming all that casting directors ask an actor to repeat. Start with Battlestar Galactica, but there is no need for every casting director to start there too.
