Fi1m perspective

James Marsden is a dependable supporting actor with a welcome willingness to look foolish. We rate him most highly when his charm serves a character's inflated opinion of himself, and less when charm is all the script requires.

Marsden lets a self-important man believe in himself long enough for us to enjoy how foolish he is. Jury Duty (2023), with the actor playing a version of himself, makes productive use of that comic instinct. He is willing to be the buffoon, rather than insist on being liked. We would like more of his parts to trust him with that much vanity.

His breakthrough as Scott Summers, or Cyclops, in X-Men (2000) established the franchise work. The Notebook (2004) and Enchanted (2007) brought romantic parts, with the latter also giving his Prince Edward singing and comedy to handle. The shift towards television in the 2010s included Teddy Flood in Westworld (2016). These are different jobs, but the useful constant is an actor comfortable contributing without needing every scene arranged around him.

Jeff Fowler's Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) makes the limitations of his franchise employment plain. As Tom, alongside Tika Sumpter's Maddie, he is there to be supportive and to be carried about at speed. We were frustrated by the waste of him: he gets one scene of feeling before being put back on support duty. There is little room to build a performance when being available to the hedgehogs is most of the job. Jim Carrey gets two Robotniks; Marsden could have used more of one Tom.

Your Friends & Neighbors (2025), in which he plays Owen Ashe, is a more rewarding watch. Jon Hamm is the chief attraction, and the ensemble keeps the relationship drama lively even when the observations about privilege sound familiar. We recommend it for that ensemble, with modest expectations of the social commentary, rather than as a reason to single Marsden out.

His leading-man looks have sometimes narrowed the parts on offer, and his preference for character roles makes sense. There is nothing wrong with being reliable company, but the comic work suggests he can do more than keep a film agreeable. Start with Jury Duty, where he is allowed to make a fool of himself.
