Fi1m perspective

Javier Bardem makes quiet courtesy frightening and finds humour in a man’s unshakeable belief. We rate him highly, though he can become monotonous when a part asks only for solemnity.

In Cape Fear (2026), Javier Bardem’s Cady speaks quietly and waits. He has learned in prison that he need not hurry, and his courtesy makes the people around him uneasy. We were frightened by how little he needed to do: for a long stretch, nobody could prove he had done anything at all. The ten-episode series stretches its story too far, but the performance gives us a reason to stay.

The early Spanish work includes Jamón jamón (1992), with Before Night Falls (2000) bringing international attention. Then Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men (2007) established his global reputation, and Skyfall (2012) put him in another villain’s role. It is easy to see why menace became such a regular assignment. Yet the warmth of his less threatening work matters just as much to our view of him.

Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two (2024) makes good use of his willingness to take a character’s convictions seriously. As Stilgar, he finds support for the prophecy in everything Paul does, even a denial. Bardem lets the reasoning be funny without treating the man as a fool. We can laugh at the certainty and still understand how completely Stilgar believes it, because Bardem never signals that he knows better than the character.

The limitation is plain in Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid (2023). His King Triton sits bearded and sorrowful, and the sorrow barely changes. There is little for us to follow from one scene to the next, however imposing the presence. The film is overlong and murky, but this is also a performance that settles for one expression.

Joseph Kosinski’s F1 (2025) gives him a more useful supporting job as team owner Ruben Cervantes. Bardem supplies warmth and a persistent look of financial worry, enough to make Ruben feel occupied even when the sports-film plotting is familiar. It is a modest pleasure in a film whose racing is much better than its conversations. For the sharper demonstration of what he can do, start with Stilgar; Cady asks for considerably more of the evening.
