Fi1m perspective

Jenna Fischer can make a pause feel like a sensible person's decision not to speak. We rate her quiet comic judgement in The Office; we would like more parts that ask something different of it.

Jenna Fischer lets a look register before she asks for a laugh. As Pam Beesly in The Office (2005), she seems to be deciding how much of the day's nonsense is worth answering. Steve Carell's Michael makes the workplace exhausting, and Fischer gives us a reason to stay. We felt relieved by her quieter playing alongside John Krasinski's Jim Halpert, because their reactions gave us a rest from Michael's need for attention.

Rainn Wilson's insistent Dwight Schrute is useful here, too: Pam's relative quiet makes sense beside someone so determined to be heard. Fischer and Krasinski help the office feel staffed by people with different limits, and their rapport is worth the time spent in their company. The programme's borrowed beginnings and occasional overplaying still matter, and the restrained performances cannot fix every scene. But Fischer is good at letting us recognise a feeling before pressing for the joke, which gives the comedy some warmth.

The difficulty is that her breakthrough in The Office made those qualities hard to separate from one character. Blades of Glory (2007) and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) brought film comedy alongside that television role. Later television leads included You, Me and the Apocalypse (2015) and Splitting Up Together (2018–2019), but finding dissimilar parts has remained difficult. We would like to see that patience put to work in characters who are less immediately reassuring.

Mean Girls (2024) gives her a supporting part as Mrs. Heron, mother to Angourie Rice's Cady. It offers little reason to shift the emphasis away from Pam when considering her work. The film's forgettable songs and recycled jokes leave us with a mixed verdict; having Fischer among the adults is not, by itself, a recommendation. Start with The Office, and be prepared to put up with the boss.
