Jensen Ackles makes swagger funny without making loyalty look foolish. We rate him most highly when another actor can push back: his partnership with Jared Padalecki gives Supernatural a steadiness its stories do not always deserve.
Fi1m perspective
In Supernatural (2005), Jensen Ackles lets Dean Winchester enjoy his own swagger, then makes his attachment to his brother convincing enough to survive the joke. He can be the louder man without making every exchange belong to him. Jared Padalecki's Sam offers resistance, and Ackles leaves room for it. We recommend the partnership more confidently than the monster hunts, which can become familiar before they have properly begun.
Before Dean, his regular television work included Eric Brady in Days of Our Lives from 1997 to 2000 and Jason Teague in Smallville from 2004 to 2005. We were bored, then irritated, by the witchcraft stretch of Smallville (2001), with Ackles as a games coach with a secret. It would be unfair to blame him for a programme whose weekly formula was already wearing thin. There is only so much a regular cast can do when the story keeps offering variations on the same episode.
Supernatural kept him as Dean for 15 seasons, from 2005 to 2020, and the performance has more to do than keep the wisecracks coming. Ackles makes the humour compatible with the brothers' affection, even when their dialogue insists on spelling that affection out. Eric Kripke's premise gives them people to save and things to hunt; the complications are not always an improvement. When the programme gets bogged down explaining another layer of supernatural business, its dependence on the two actors becomes too obvious.
After Supernatural ended in 2020, The Boys reunited him with Kripke in 2022, this time as the satirical anti-hero Soldier Boy. That is a sensible way to put his established confidence to a different use, rather than simply finding him another brother to protect. His voice work as Batman in Batman: The Long Halloween (2021) also takes him beyond Dean without leaving genre storytelling. For the clearest reason to watch him, though, start with Supernatural, with patience for the episodes that let the actors down.
