Fi1m perspective

John Howard is good at making respectable men look self-serving and grotesque supporting figures look dangerous. We value his dependability, though the Mad Max appearances offer only a narrow introduction to his work.

John Howard often plays men whose job titles deserve more respect than their behaviour. We rate him as a dependable character actor, good at finding the self-interest beneath a respectable exterior and at making an eccentric supporting figure feel dangerous. Early film work included The Club (1980) and Razorback (1984), but Australian television made him widely known. As shire president Bob Jelly in SeaChange (1998–2000), he had a role suited to that mixture of authority and self-interest. The sustained television work continued with Dr Frank Campion in All Saints (2004–2009).

The international introduction was stranger: the People Eater in George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). Howard's physical transformation and vocal delivery make this grotesque figure noticeable within a crowded ensemble. We were exhilarated by the film because Miller keeps the desert chase clear even at its most frantic. Charlize Theron gives it purpose, and Howard's smaller contribution is effective without being central to what makes the film work. Several supporting characters deserve more attention, so this is a strong recommendation for the film with a caveat for anyone coming chiefly to watch him.

He returns as the People Eater in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (2024), which we recommend with more caution. Miller gives us an inventive middle hour, but the digital sand distracts and the account of Furiosa's past feels unnecessary. Howard is well suited to this grotesque company, though another appearance in the same role tells us little more about what he can do. The difference in our enthusiasm for these films is chiefly a matter of Miller's storytelling.

The long television roles are worth seeking out before treating the People Eater as a complete introduction. Howard's stage background helps account for his ease with larger characterisations, but Bob Jelly also offers the more familiar spectacle of a respectable official looking after himself. If the elaborate transformation is all that comes to mind, spend some time with SeaChange.
