John Leguizamo's quick delivery can make him seem an obvious choice for comic support. We value him more broadly than that: his brief Eumaeus in The Odyssey is the performance we kept thinking about.
Fi1m perspective
In The Odyssey (2026), John Leguizamo's Eumaeus gets less screen time than the other principal figures on Ithaca. We were surprised by how long he stayed with us: his was the performance from those scenes that we remembered longest. Christopher Nolan's film is strongest when it settles into this besieged household, and Leguizamo belongs to the stretch we most admire. We rate him for making a supporting part matter, even when the film has much larger things to attend to.
His early screen work frequently cast him as an energetic, streetwise Latino outsider, with criminal roles becoming a restriction. Carlito’s Way (1993), in which he plays Benny Blanco, was a breakthrough within that pattern. The one-man stage shows offered more room for personal and Latino cultural experience, mixing comedy with autobiography. Those shows make the repeated criminal parts look like a failure of imagination in the casting.
Baz Luhrmann cast him as Tybalt in Romeo + Juliet (1996), while Ice Age (2002) put his vocal flexibility to work as Sid. These are useful reminders of how much he can do with the delivery of a line. Neither role, though, tells us what he could do with a whole film built around him. His limited opportunities to lead major studio films leave that question less thoroughly tested than we would like.
Smoke (2025) is a useful caution against assuming that a role written for an actor will make a programme work. Esposito was written specifically for Leguizamo in Dennis Lehane's series, yet the nine-episode arson investigation cannot sustain its length. Our strongest praise went to Taron Egerton and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, while the later repetitions made a disturbing drama frustrating. The acting makes it worth considering, provided a strong cast is enough compensation for a story that keeps repeating itself.
For the clearest reason we would keep following him, go back to Eumaeus. The Odyssey asks patience during its sagging middle, but the Ithaca scenes repay it. Start there if the voice work has left you expecting only comic bustle.
