Fi1m perspective

Johnny Cash is most persuasive when a part draws on the authority of his voice or puts him among singers and outlaws. The acting can be uneven, but Columbo and The Simpsons make good use of what he brings.

As the Space Coyote in his 1997 appearance on The Simpsons, Johnny Cash gives Homer's spirit guide a voice we are inclined to trust. It is a good joke to entrust that job to him, and a better one to let him sound qualified. We found him oddly reassuring, because the authority in his delivery makes this unlikely guide seem worth hearing out. The casting allows the programme's humour and tenderness to work together. Cash does not need a large part to make an impression, though he does need a part that knows what to do with him.

His early television and film work often drew on his public image as an outlaw or redeemed sinner. Wagon Train (1959) placed him in a Western, and A Gunfight (1971) gave him a lead as Abe Cross opposite Kirk Douglas. A script could count on those associations before he had done much acting. That was a sensible way to use him, though the stronger results tended to come when the part also drew on his experience in music.

Columbo: Swan Song (1974) makes a more substantial demand, casting him as Tommy Brown, a gospel singer plotting murder. Cash is persuasive as a man from the music business, and that credibility matters more here than polish in every line. Peter Falk's patient questioning gives such a guest performance time to establish itself, even if the programme's familiar routine can feel stretched. Cash's magnetism makes Brown worth spending that time with, without requiring us to approve of him. There are awkward line readings, but they do not undo our belief that Brown knows this business.

The later television work could still call on that Western familiarity: he played Kid Cole in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman between 1993 and 1997. The move to voice parts, from the coyote to narration for The Hunted (2003), offered a way to use his authority without testing his ease on camera. Those credits are not a reason to work through every guest appearance. We would start with Swan Song, then let the coyote lighten the evening.
