Fi1m perspective

Josh Holloway makes abrasive men worth spending time with, and Lost gives his humour and vulnerability room to work. We rate him most highly when a role asks for more than the familiar tough-guy charm.

In Lost (2004), Josh Holloway’s Sawyer helps stop a group of endangered strangers from becoming equally solemn. He has the toughness for the situation, but the nicknames and wry humour keep asserting a personality the emergency has not erased. We were grateful for that humour: Holloway made the shared danger bearable without making us stop caring about it. His appeal is strongest when we can enjoy his company and still see why another character might find him exhausting.

Alongside Jorge Garcia’s Hurley Reyes, he gives the ensemble a welcome difference of temperament, and the performances make the risk of trusting another survivor persuasive. Holloway can move between comedy and drama within the same character, letting vulnerability show beneath the roguish manner. Sawyer was his breakthrough and occupied him from 2004 to 2010, giving those changes time to matter. We recommend the series partly for him, with a caveat about the script’s habit of delaying answers.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011) offers a much smaller sample, with Holloway in the brief role of Hanaway. Brad Bird’s film is a tense, funny team adventure, and its unusually clear action is reason enough to watch. It does not give Holloway the space that Sawyer had, which makes it a poor basis for deciding what else he might manage. Choose it for the team rather than for him.

The larger roles came back on television, with leads in Intelligence (2014) and Colony (2016–2018). As Will Bowman in Colony, he reunited with Lost producer Carlton Cuse. The qualification there is that capable dramatic work does not always leave much room for his comedy. Casting him as a serious man is reasonable; keeping him serious loses something worth having.

Duster (2025) casts him as Jim Ellis and reunites him with Lost creator J.J. Abrams. A lead role is welcome, but we want the humour and vulnerability to get as much work as the physical confidence. Start with Lost, provided that spending time with the survivors matters at least as much as getting answers.
