Fi1m perspective

Judge Reinhold makes the wish to seem competent funny without making it contemptible. His supporting performances work best when embarrassment has an everyday cause: a job going badly, or a conversation conducted much too close.

Brad Hamilton wants to look as though he knows what he is doing, even when his fast-food jobs make that difficult. In Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), Judge Reinhold makes this small teenage ambition worth caring about. We winced for Brad because Reinhold makes looking foolish at work feel like a disaster. The performance is funny because the wish to seem competent is so familiar, and sympathetic because he lets us see how much it matters to Brad.

The move from Brad to Detective Billy Rosewood in Beverly Hills Cop (1984) brought him into a comedy built around Eddie Murphy. Reinhold’s boyish, hapless manner was well suited to working alongside a bigger star. A leading role in Vice Versa (1988) was followed by more supporting roles, television guest spots and reprises of familiar parts. Neal Miller, the concerned stepfather in The Santa Clause (1994), fits that pattern, as does another turn as Rosewood in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024).

His 1994 appearance in Seinfeld makes the method less gentle. As Aaron, the close talker, he turns the distance between two people into the joke. The humour needs little explanation: Aaron gets too close, and ordinary conversation becomes an ordeal. That broad physical comedy belongs comfortably in a series we value for its ensemble work and attention to bad behaviour. We still prefer Brad, whose embarrassment allows Reinhold to do more than make somebody else uncomfortable.

There are limits to what his sympathy can repair. Amy Heckerling’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High is loosely told and sometimes cruel, and Reinhold cannot make those weaknesses disappear. He does give it a useful subject beyond teenagers competing to seem sexually knowledgeable, with Brad’s jobs bringing the comedy down to an ordinary working day. Start there for Reinhold, allowing for a film that is not always as considerate as his performance.
