Fi1m perspective

Judith Barsi makes Ducky an approachable companion in The Land Before Time. We value that childlike directness, though the film’s squeakier exchanges can wear thin; her voice work with Don Bluth gives us the clearest reason to seek her out.

Ducky keeps answering with an optimism that survives repetition. In The Land Before Time (1988), Judith Barsi gives the little dinosaur a child’s sound, helping to make a prehistoric travelling party feel like possible friends. Alongside Gabriel Damon’s Littlefoot and Candace Hutson’s Cera, she makes the companionship easy to accept before the film starts teaching its lessons. This is the useful thing about her performance: we can hear why a younger child would want to stay with these creatures.

Her screen work had moved through television and commercials before the supporting role of Thea Brody in Jaws: The Revenge (1987). A supporting child role cannot reasonably be asked to repair its unconvincing revenge plot or make the attacks work. Lorraine Gary and Michael Caine supply some warmth, but it remains a poor thriller, and there is little reason to recommend it as an introduction to Barsi. The more useful turn in her work comes with the move into animation and her collaboration with Don Bluth.

Bluth also directed her as Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989), extending the voice work beyond Ducky. He praised her ability to understand and respond to verbal direction in sophisticated situations, a useful reminder that an apparently simple child performance still involves listening and adjustment. In The Land Before Time, she fits the other young voices rather than overwhelming them. The animation supplies much of the physical character, while Barsi helps make this small companion sound approachable.

There is a limit to the approach, and it matters when adults are watching alongside children. We grew tired of the squeakier delivery in The Land Before Time, because it distracted us from the creatures we wanted to watch. That is a reservation about the ensemble’s sound, not a reason to dismiss Barsi’s appealing directness or to single her out for blame. Start with Ducky; younger children are likelier than adults to take to the company.
