Fi1m perspective

We rate Juno Temple for her comic warmth and dramatic intensity, especially when television gives her room to use them. She can overplay eccentricity, though, and a film that leaves her explaining its plot wastes what she can do.

In Unsane (2018), Juno Temple’s ward bully Violet seems to belong to a louder film than everyone else. Her hissing aggression is too emphatic for the unease Soderbergh builds around Claire Foy. It is a useful warning about an actor often cast for eccentricity. Temple can make intensity convincing, but oddness alone gives her too little to work with. We prefer her when a part allows some warmth or gives that ferocity a reason.

Her breakthrough as Lola Quincey in Joe Wright’s Atonement (2007) came in a film that understood how much damage a glance could do. We recommend the film for its sharply acted relationships, with a reservation about war scenes that sometimes advertise the effort behind them. Temple went on to supporting parts in The Dark Knight Rises (2012) and Maleficent (2014). The career change that matters here is the move from those supporting appearances to sustained television roles.

As Keeley Jones in Ted Lasso (2020), she has room for comic timing and charm within an ensemble. The fifth series of Fargo (2023–2024) gives her the lead as Dorothy ‘Dot’ Lyon and a tougher dramatic task. Her convincing resilience there makes better use of her intensity than Violet’s oversized hostility. Those parts are good reasons to seek her out, rather than merely recognise her when she appears.

Kelly Marcel’s Venom: The Last Dance (2024) offers a less useful job: explaining the plot. Temple’s Dr. Teddy Paine wants the creature kept alive and studied, while Chiwetel Ejiofor’s soldier Strickland wants it caught. Neither actor is bad, but they get much of the dialogue and scarcely any jokes, leaving Temple to explain when she might have been allowed to act. We were bored, then irritated, by the repeated explanations of the codex, because they kept interrupting Tom Hardy’s bickering double performance. Start with her television work; there is no need to endure an alien briefing to find out what she can do.
